Enter Sandman for 600

The song "Enter Sandman" now has two meanings since I got to Virginia Tech. When I hear it on campus, I think about the football team running out of the tunnel. Any other time, I think about my favorite baseball player, Mariano Rivera, coming out of the bullpen for the save. Hitters in the majors admit fearing his cut-fastball. They know it is coming, but still can not hit it.

I read an article in the New York Times about Rivera and how he approaching his 600th save. I agree with the author of the article because he says that the milestone is underrated. My parents ordered the MLB package through Cox cable, so we watch every single Yankee game. Not once did I hear on the Yankees' network that Rivera was approaching 600 saves and the career saves record. Derek Jeter's quest for his 3000th hit was the biggest story on ESPN for two weeks. People could say that 3000 hits is more impressive than 600 saves, but 28 players have 3000 hits and only 2 pitchers have 600 saves.

I think that since Rivera is already considered the best closer of all time, this milestone and record is overkill. It probably is not being publicized because everyone will say that "it was about time," or "he didn't already have that record?" As a Yankee fan, I am disappointed in myself and the sports media that I did not know about Rivera's upcoming milestone, and I hope that Rivera gets the same attention Jeter recieved after reaching 3000 hits.
